Shop-with-a-Cop Puts Smiles on Kids Faces

By LOUANN BUHLINGER, GasserOnline Contributor

“Legos. I want Legos. And, my mom wants a bracelet.” That’s the type of conversation that occurred early Saturday morning, December 12, 2009, between kids and cops at the Rotary Club of Tulsa’s annual Shop-With-a-Cop event.

There, in the warehouse area of Wal-Mart at Admiral and Memorial, more than 30 kids from Celia Clinton Elementary were paired with Rotarians and police officers to map out a plan for shopping.

While the police office and the children were shopping for their families, Rotarians were secretly shopping for the children. Funded by the Tulsa FOP and the Rotary Club of Tulsa, the goal of the program is to create a new relationship between children and police. Working together, the kids can see the cops as real people and someone to go to for help. It also creates a Christmas for families who do not have money to buy gifts.

After the shopping was completed, student volunteers from the University of Tulsa helped to wrap the gifts. By the time lunch was over, smiling kids were seen dragging huge shopping bags full of goodies to meet their eager parents.

Chairman of the event was Rotarian Scotty Edwards.
